Karlstejn is one of the Czech Republic's most famous castles, originally built for Holy Roman Emperor Charles the Great back in the 14th Century. It was used for many years to house the Bohemian Crown Jewels, and many of the most precious relicts and artefacts of the Empire. Nowaday the crown jewels are locked up in Prague, but Karlstejn is still home to a collection of replicas, as well as an extesive portrait gallery of Bohemia's rulers. Karlstejn has undergone many reconstructions over the years, and nowadays it has the look of a fairytale Castle, perched high on a hill overlooking the surrounding forests.
